In an effort to introduce "real world" driving to the driving test, the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) will introduce night time tests, by the beginning of April 2010 at the latest.
Candidates booking tests will be passed through a "randomiser", and one in every three will have to take their test between 11:00pm and 4:00am.
Rosmary Phew, a spokesperson for the DSA, said yesterday:
"Learners are too reliant on being able to see, and being awake, when they take their driving test. Introducing night time tests will enable the DSA to truly assess a candidates' ability to keep safe at a time when most motorists are tucked up in bed."
Examiners are happy about this new arrangement. A union spokesperson said:
"We are getting triple time to do tests at night. Not only will the test be more realistic, we will be better off too."
Two new "show me, tell me" questions will be introduced at the same time, covering setting an alarm clock, and how to wear pyjamas under an overcoat.
The cost of a driving test will rise accordingly, to a very affordable £177.50
