Show me, tell me question - brake fluid reservoir

< Previous question    Introduction    Next question >

"Open the bonnet, identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid."

Remember, the examiner only wants you to point at the brake fluid reservoir, don't get your hands dirty!

The brake fluid reservoir is shown on this picture:

Under the hood

OK - it isn't shown! In most cars, it's hidden away at the back of the engine compartment.

Brake fluid transmits the pressure from your foot on the brake pedal to the brakes at each wheel. If the brake fluid is leaking, or has air in it, the brake will feel spongy, or go right down to the floor!

This is the best shot I could get of the elusive brake fluid reservoir. It has a yellow cap on this car. Like the engine coolant, you can see throught the container to check the level inside. There will be maximum and minimum marks.

Brake fluid

The brake fluid probably won't need topping up, the weekly check is to make sure the level is OK. If the level drops suddenly - get the car checked out! Brake fluid does an important job, don't forget to check.

Check your brake fluid reservoir at least once a week and before long journeys.

  • Brake fluid is toxic - it will strip the paint from your car if you spill it.
  • Remember - RTFM!! Read The Flippin' Manual - before doing this on your own car.
