"Show me how you would check the parking brake for excessive wear."
Parking brake - handbrake - same thing.
The handbrake will gradually wear and stretch. If your car is not serviced regularly, it may come up too high and will not be tight enough. You will feel it come to a stop (the end of its travel) before it is tight.
To check if the handbrake is working, release it and re-apply. It shouldn't come to a stop before it feels tight. The button should work, and stop the handbrake dropping when you let go.
