Show me, tell me questions - introduction

You don't have to be a mechanic to check your car

Modern cars don't break down very often. They're made in hi-tech factories to very fine tolerances. Which means we've all got a bit lazy when it comes to making simple checks.

But next time you're travelling down a motorway at 70 mph, with the scenery whizzing past, don't forget that there are only four tiny patches of rubber holding you on the road. And the engine is whizzing round at about three thousand times a minute. Now, when did you last check the tyres? Or the oil level??

Even if you make it to the hard shoulder, it's not a very safe place to be while you're waiting for help. A few minutes doing simple checks every week could save hours of hassle.

Enter the driving test examiner. To encourage you to keep safe in your nice new car, (s)he will ask you a couple of questions at the start of your driving test. Really simple things, like opening the bonnet and pointing out where to check the oil, or showing them how to check that the horn works.
