"Show me / explain how you would check that the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey."
You would probably be aware of a power steering fault immediately - you would find it very hard to turn the wheel! However, to do a simple check turn the wheel enough to feel resistance, and then start the car (you remembered to check handbrake and neutral, didn't you?) - like this:
When the engine starts, the wheel will move, because the power steering makes it easier to turn. If the wheel doesn't move, then you have got a problem.
If you take your test in a car that doesn't have power steering, just explain what you would do if it was fitted.
