Show me, tell me question - tyre tread

< Previous question    Introduction    Next question >

"Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road."

Just explain this to the examiner.

Tyres "tread" means the grooves in the outside edge of the tyre. They help keep the tyre on the road when it is wet. Without tread, the tyre will trap a layer of water underneath, and "aquaplane" - skid.

The legal minimum depth of tread for car tyres is 1.6mm - or 1/16 of an inch, for you non metric people. (About the thickness of a matchstick). New tyres often have about 8 - 10 mm of tread.

This tyre is partly worn, it has about 4 -5 mm of tread.

Tyre tread

Wear indicators are located at the bottom of the tread, one of them is arrowed here:

Wear indicator

A tyre is at the end of its life if worn down level with the indicator.

  • The side wall of the tyre must be in good condition. Any cuts or bulges mean it is not legal.
  • Your spare tyre must be legal - as well as being correctly inflated.
  • You can save money on many motoring costs, but cheap tyres are often a false economy. They are the only thing holding you on the road.
  • Uneven tyre wear can be caused by many things. The wrong pressures, worn suspension or the wheels being out of alignment are common causes.
