Theory test

The theory test - thirty quids worth of hi-tech assessment to make sure you know the ropes.

Introduced in 1996, the theory test was simple - 35 multiple choice questions, fifteen pounds, and Bob's your Mum's brother. Do a few sums on the back of a fag packet, and that same £15.00 is now worth £21.60 - ish. The current £30 fee is due to the addition of the hazard perception test in 2002, and pushing the number of questions up to 50 (2007).

With a pass rate of 68% (2006 - 2007), almost one in three tests is failed! There's lots of help here to make sure you don't cough up that £30 fee more than once.

Multiple choice test

Question, questions. It seems life is full of questions. At least 50 of them, anyway. Multiple choice questions are the first part of the theory test. A score of 43 out of 50 is the minimum needed to pass.

Hazard perception test

It's reckoned that an experienced driver will spot a hazard up to two seconds earlier than a new driver. In two seconds, at 70 mph, you will travel around 63 metres (205 feet). Quite an advantage? It's no surprise that the DSA are trying to get us all to be more aware of the hazards around us.

On the day

Make sure you know where the theory test centre is. It's not the same place as the practical driving test centre. Take both parts of your licence - the photo card and the paper counterpart. Remember,
no licence - no test.
(Note: If you have an old style paper licence, you will need a current passport as well - no other form of photographic identification will be accepted.)
